Lots of people want to know if their current vehicle can tow an Airstream Trailer, so they need to know how much Airstream trailers really weigh. Well, because I love trailers and have a love for the classic Airstream models I made a towing guide with all the information that you need.

So, how much do Airstream trailers weigh? There are 9 different styles of Airstream travel trailers, but the 5 most common trailer base weights are:

  • 2019 Basecamp weighs 2585 lbs.
  • 2019 Sport weighs 2860 lbs.
  • 2019 Flying Cloud weighs 3852 lbs.
  • 2019 Tommy Bahama weighs 4200 lbs.
  • 2019 Classic weighs 7788 lbs.

These are some great trailers that can be the perfect fit for your family and hopefully for your current vehicle. There is a lot that goes into towing weight though other than just the base number. So, there are lists, tables, and examples below for each of the nine separate models of Airstream trailers.

How Much Do Airstream Travel Trailers Weigh?

Most people hear a towing weight and think assume that the weight they hear is all that goes into towing a trailer. Airstream travel trailers are just like the rest of the trailers in the world which means that there is more information needed to determine the towing weight than just the number of the base weight.

The base weight is just how much the trailer weighs when it is taken off of the assembly line, and it does not account for water weight and the weight of the stuff put inside of it.

It is so important to know more about the trailer than just its base weight.

I will list all 9 models of Airstream trailers and their base weights; then I will dive in to specific detail about each model of trailer and all the different weights that play a part of the Airstream’s towing weight.

  • 2019 Basecamp weighs 2,585 lbs.
  • 2019 Nest weighs 3,400 lbs.
  • 2019 Sport weighs 2,860 lbs.
  • 2019 Flying Cloud weighs 3,852 lbs.
  • 2019 International Signature weighs 4,761 lbs.
  • 2019 International Serenity weighs 4,761 lbs.
  • 2019 Tommy Bahama weighs 4,200 lbs.
  • 2019 Globetrotter weighs 6,074 lbs.
  • 2019 Classic weighs 7,788 lbs.

Before we get into the specific specs (aka specifications) of the different models of Airstream travel trailers it is important to know what each number means and why it is provided in the specifications of the trailers.

What are All the Different Weights That Airstream Trailers Have? What Do Those Weights Mean?

The five different weights that you are going to see on the specs of Airstream trailers are:

  1. Hitch Weight (with LP and Batteries)
  2. Unit Base Weight (with LP and Batteries)
  3. Maximum Trailer Capacity (GVWR) (lbs.)
  4. Net Carrying Capacity (lbs.)
  5. Fresh Water Tank (gal.)

Hitch weight, which is also referred to tongue weight, is referring to the amount of downward pressure that is put upon the hitch by the trailer when that trailer is attached.

This weight is important to know because you want to make sure that you buy the right size and weight of hitch. It is always wise to buy a hitch that has a larger tongue weight than the trailer you are going to be carrying so that you have a buffer, and just to be safe.

Unit Base Weight is how much a trailer ways as it leaves the assembly line. This means that this weight is not accounting for any of the personal items that you will place inside your trailer.

It also does not account for any water weight. whether that is fresh water weight or waste-water weight. None of these extra weights are taken into account when providing the Unit Base Weight.

Maximum Trailer Capacity (GVWR) is the combined weight of the trail, so the trailers base weight, plus all of the cargo that is placed inside-of the trailer.

That includes both of the water weights and the extra weight that is added from things that will be placed inside your trailer before you begin towing it.

It is the total weight that is applied to the axles plus the total weight that is applied on the trailer tongue.

GVWR is an acronym for Gross Vehicle Weight Rating and is the maximum operating weight or mass of any vehicle or trailer. This number is specified by the manufacturer.

Net Carrying Capacity is the maximum weight of cargo that the trailer can or should carry. This includes all of the tanks like water tanks, propane tanks, and everything you add to your trailer.

Manufacturers get the Maximum Trailer Capacity by adding the Net Carrying Capacity to the Unit Base Weight of the trailer.

Fresh Water Tank is the amount of water that the fresh water tank holds. It is incredibly important to know this number for two main reasons.

  1. You need to know how much fresh water you will have available to you while you are using your trailer.
  2. You need to know how much weight that the water is going to take up so that you can better know how much stuff you will be packing into your trailer.

All of the weights and terms are important to know when purchasing any trailer and while trying to figure out if your current vehicle can tow that much weight.

The vehicle you choose to pull your trailer needs to be able to pull over the Maximum Trailer Capacity. This is important because a vehicle’s towing capacity doesn’t just include the trailer it is towing but it includes all of the people and things that are paced into the actual vehicle itself.

Specs for the 2019 Basecamp

The Basecamp Travel Trailer was made for those who want to see the world. Built for adventure, it’s a small camping trailer that’s tough enough to go anywhere your wanderlust takes you, and comfortable enough to help you really enjoy the time you spend there.

The Airstream Basecamp trailer is the smallest travel trailer that Airstream has. It is cute and cozy but definitely not big enough for more than 2. In order to tow an Airstream Basecamp the vehicle will need to have a towing capacity of at least 5,500 lbs.

I love the Airstream Sport because it is still small and light weight, but it easily sleeps four people. This is nice if you want a little camping trailer that allows you to move around pretty freely.

As always you are going to want to tow this trailer with a vehicle that has a bigger towing capacity than the Maximum Trailer Capacity that the trailer has, so your vehicle should be able to tow 5,500 lbs.

The name of the Airstream Tommy Bahama is probably my favorite just because it makes me feel like I need to be active and outdoors. Both of these feelings are great when you are out camping with family or friends.

The Airstream Tommy Bahama is starting to push out of the mid-sized trailers into the large trailers being anywhere from 19′ to 27′ feet. It also has quite the relaxing and beachy feel with its decorations and styling.

You really should have a vehicle that tows at least 7,000 lbs. But like always preferably more.

The Airstream Globetrotter has four different floor plans to choose from and buyers can choose to have a queen sized bed up front or two twin sized beds up front.

The Airstream classic is just what its’ name says it is the classic Airstream trailer. Personally, it is the image that comes to mind when I picture an Airstream trailer.

It is quite the beast coming in lengths of 30′ to 33′ feet and weighing 7,788 pounds straight from the factory. It is the roomiest trailer though and does a great job with families are large groups of friends.

It comes in four floor plans and normally sleeps around 5 people. You should be certain that your vehicle can tow no less than 12,000 lbs. But it is wise to have 12,000 pounds be in the middle of your towing range, just like it should be with all of the trailers that we have talked about.
