We Tried This $90 Portable Power Bank — Here’s What We Thought
Whether you are taking a family road trip or boondocking off-the-grid, a portable power bank can be useful in many ways while traveling. Some of the great uses for them include:
- Keeping your phone charged while on-the-go.
- If you’re a working full-timer, you can keep your laptop charged while dry camping.
- If your kids stay entertained with tablets, portable power banks will also keep those devices charged.
- They can also come in handy if the power goes out at home and you need to charge your devices.
We recently came across an innovative new portable power bank with a massive 20,000 mAh battery capacity: the Laptop Power Bank made by Eggtronic. So, we decided to try it out ourselves to see how well this portable power bank would keep our devices charged while on-the-go.
The Eggtronic Laptop Power Bank
As we mentioned, this portable power bank has an impressive 20,000 mAh capacity with 63W of total output power. This roughly translates to about 4-8 charges for your smartphone, 3-5 charges for your tablet, or 1.5 charges for your laptop.
It has a slim, lightweight design that can easily fit in your pocket or backpack. According to Eggtronic, the portable power bank was designed in Italy with a focus on simplicity, durability, and effortless usability. It is made with a soft water-repellent canvas as well as three USB ports for charging multiple devices at the same time.
Charging ports
The power bank is universally compatible with all USB and USB-C devices. It features three charging ports:
- USB-C input/output for recharging the battery bank, or charging laptops including Macbook, Dell, Lenovo, HP, and other USB-C laptops.
- A regular USB-A output port that can charge your phone or tablet.
- And a USB Quick Charge port that will quickly charge a second device.
Battery power display
The portable power bank has a very straightforward, easy-to-read LCD display on the front of the device. When plugged in to the wall to recharge, or to a device for charging, a number is displayed from 0-100 to indicate how much power is left (100 being fully charged). This makes it easier to tell exactly how much power is left, as opposed to other devices that show how many bars are left.
Our portable power bank test
When I received the power bank, it was already pre-charged at 68. However, once I plugged it in with the included USB-C to USB-A adapter, it only took about an hour or two to top it off at 100.
The power bank also comes with a 3-foot-long USB-C to USB-cable for recharging. You can alternatively purchase a high-speed 30W or Sirius 65W AC Adapter to maximize the battery recharge speed. According to Eggtronic, it takes about 6 hours to fully recharge the battery bank with a 15W adapter and just 3-3.5 hours with a 29W/30W power adapter.
To charge my phone and tablet, I simply used the universal USB charging cables that I already own and use to plug in to the wall charger. Both of my devices plugged in seamlessly to two of the three USB ports. In just an hour, my phone was fully recharged and the bank had only dropped to 98%. A couple of hours later, my tablet was fully charged and the bank was not even down to 90%.
How long the battery bank lasts ultimately depends on how often you use your devices and how long their battery power lasts. At just one recharge a day for your phone, this power bank could easily last a week or more on a single charge. If you use your phone and laptop often and need to recharge a few times a day, the battery bank may need to be recharged every few days.
My Android phone battery does not hold a charge long and needs to be recharged several times throughout the day. My tablet gets used daily for several activities and needs to be recharged every few days. The portable power bank easily took care of all my devices’ power needs for a few days before needing to be recharged with the wall adapter again.
