Published on February 18th, 2022 by Emily Lawrence

The Pros And Cons Of A Super C Motorhome

If you’re shopping around for a new RV, you may have heard of something called a Super C motorhome. These extra large motorhomes are kind of a mix between Class A and Class C models. However, they are still built on a truck chassis instead of a bus, so they are still considered to be Class C motorhomes.

Some benefits of a Super C motorhome include increased interior space, more storage, and luxurious features. On the other hand, these RVs tend to be quite expensive, and they can be large and bulky to drive. But they are still easy to handle compared to Class A motorhomes!

We’ll dive deeper into the pros and cons of these motorhomes as well as how they differ from traditional Class C motorhomes. There’s lots to explore, so let’s get started.

Benefits of a Super C RV

Relatively easy to drive

Compared to the massive Class A motorhomes on the market, Super C models are pretty manageable on the road. These RVs are a bit larger than the average Class C RV, and they are built on a truck chassis. This makes them sturdy and easy to maneuver. In addition, it gives them a good amount of power!

Luxury amenities

Super C motorhomes live up to their name when it comes to the build quality. These are larger and more luxurious than most Class C motorhomes. They tend to have more upscale features such as residential refrigerators, king-sized beds, etc. If your preferences lean to the fancier side, a Super C RV could be perfect for you.

Larger floorplan

Because Super C motorhomes are larger than standard Class C models, they have more interior space and larger floor plans. Of course, every model is different, but Super C motorhomes tend to have more slide-outs. This means there are lots of ways to expand your space.

Wide wheel base

Because of the truck chassis that these vehicles are built on, they have a lower center of gravity. They have a wider wheel base compared to Class A motorhomes, so they are more stable on the roads. Tipping and swaying is less of a concern when you choose one of these models.

More storage space

In addition to more interior space, Super C motorhomes also have much more storage space to offer. They have all the standard cabinets and overhead storage in the living space, but these vehicles also have large storage compartments located underneath the cabin. This design is similar to Class A motorhomes, and it enables you to bring much more gear in a Super C. Bulky items are easier to pack with this layout as well.

High towing capacity

By necessity, the truck chassis of these motorhomes is large and powerful. This means that Super C RVs are quite strong and can haul a good amount of weight behind them. If you plan on towing an extra car or boat behind you, this feature will certainly come in handy.

Drawbacks

Expensive

One of the biggest and most obvious drawbacks of a Super C motorhome is the price. You can usually find Class C motorhomes for an average of $100,000. Super C motorhomes are often twice as expensive! Some new models can even be $600,000 or more. Of course, you can find cheaper ones, especially if they are used. But the high price point is off-putting to many people, and it’s a definite drawback of these vehicles.

Somewhat large and bulky

Even though Super C models are smaller than the average Class A, they are still considerably larger than most Class C RVs. The extra length can make it hard to find appropriate parking, especially if you’re trying to drive in a crowded city. It may also be harder to find campgrounds that can accommodate you. These motorhomes aren’t too tough to drive, but the extra weight and length can take a toll over time.

Chassis takes away some interior space

Because Class A motorhomes have larger hoods, you won’t have as much interior space as you might think. Looking at the total vehicle length sometimes gives you a good idea of how much space you’ll have. But keep in mind that this measurement includes the front section of the vehicle, which is unusable for storage or living space. Don’t be fooled by misleading measurements!

Less fuel efficient

Because these vehicles are large and heavy, Super C motorhomes require a lot of fuel. Motorhomes are notorious gas-guzzlers, so you need to be prepared to pay for a lot of refills. You won’t get very good mpg ratings, and this number could drop even further if you load up the motorhome with a lot of gear. Get ready to spend a lot of time at gas stations if you drive a Super C motorhome.

What are the best Super C motorhomes?

Now that you know some of the pros and cons of Super C motorhomes, let’s talk about some of the best models on the market. If you’re interested in buying one, the models below are a good place to start your search.

Newmar Supreme Aire

Newmar has several options if you’re shopping for a Super C. The Supreme Aire lineup includes 5 distinct floor plans and each one has between 3-4 slideouts. Some amenities include massive rear bathrooms, washer/dryer stations, and nice open space in the center of the floor plans.

2021 Jayco Seneca

Jayco has a large selection of motorhomes and RVs, so naturally, they would have a few Super C models. The 2021 Jayco Seneca is a fantastic vehicle that has a cozy interior design. There are 6 available floor plans and they are each just under 40 feet long. These models feature an extra bunk over the cab, rear master bedrooms, and fireplaces with TVs mounted above them.

Thor Magnitude

Thor is another great manufacturer to keep in mind if you’re interested in Class C models. The Thor Magnitude lineup includes 4 floor plans. Each design is distinct and suited for different purposes. For instance, there’s a bunkhouse model that includes a pair of bunk beds, a king-sized bed, and a bunk over the cab. Other designs have multiple bathrooms, convertible seating, etc.

Super C motorhome isn’t the right fit for everybody, but there are certainly a lot of good things they bring to the table. Don’t count them out if you’re in the market for a luxury motorhome! These vehicles are a wonderful blend between the functionality of a Class C and the size of a Class A.

  1. You have accurately point out the pros but your cons are a little off. You lose the open cab area but gain drivability and safety. Your assumptions that are wrong include being less fuel efficient, big and bulky, and more expensive. You include Newmar’s overly expensive line and fail to identify the best value line built being Renegade. There are several chassis that range in size and power train. If you compare torque HP to comparable sized and weight Class A you would see the SC advantage.

  2. The Thor Magnitude and Jayco Seneca are the same basic Super C chassis and floor plans and are both made by Thor. So, why not mention Forest River’s Dynamax and REV’s Renegade Super C’s that offer several different chassis in a variety of lengths and floorplans? Dynamax even offers 4WD on one of their models!

  3. Dynamax by Forest River was not mentioned?? Dynamax Super C’s also run Cummins Diesels and my Isata 5 gets a solid 10 MPG pulling a car on a trailer.

    Love it!

  4. Nice article…. but you failed to mention the one major manufacturer that has been making Super Cs much longer than those you mentioned. Renegade. We have a Verona LE with a Cummings 8.9L diesel that averages about 10-11 mpg. That is about the same as some Class C motorhomes. The major difference is that we can tow 20,000 lbs. The other manufacturer that you did not mention is the Dynamax by Forest River. These motorhomes are built on Freightliner M2 frames that provide a great ride and are MUCH safer than a Class A. When you get in a severe front end accident, the class Super C will always be much safer. Travel Safe and Stay Well. Kim

  5. Emily, I noticed that you did not recommend the Renegade Super C models? We have a 2020 Renegade Verona 40VRB and LOVE IT! We looked at the Jayco and it was so inferior to the Renegade! Renegade is a small company that does not put out the numbers as such larger motorhome builders. Our Renegade is very luxurious, with its wood work, infrared range, convection microwave, king bed, two bathrooms, over cab storage, paint, AquaHot water and heat system (not LP in this unit), and powerful Cumins engine! It was not cheap but affordable in the scheme of things. I encourage you to “google” it and you will be impressed! Loved your article and reference to related articles! R/Theo
