Airstream Debuts The New 2021 Basecamp 20 and 20X Trailers
Airstream recently introduced its newest additions to the brand’s “silver bullet” fleet of travel trailers, the 2021 Basecamp 20 and 20X. They are an extension to the Basecamp 16 with upgrades that include expanded floor plans, more options with storage and accessories, and continued ease with off-road travel.
“Basecamp originally launched in 2007 and its redesign in 2016 became one of the most celebrated travel trailers in our towable lineup,” said Bob Wheeler, CEO and President of Airstream. “We created it for those who want to get out and explore nature in an easy-to-use, durable, and efficient vehicle,”
What can you expect from the new Basecamp trailer?
Airstream paid attention to customer feedback regarding the Basecamp 16, and their Basecamp 20 and 20X was its response. The models include more overall space, increased length, width, and height, and they have separate sleeping and dining areas.
There are more storage compartments, and buyers have the option to customize their unit with extra features like solar panels with a controller, an air conditioning unit, or microwave if desired.
Both models include a front room dining table that converts into a bed where two children or one adult can comfortably sleep. A back room seating area comes equipped with two removable small tabletops that can be used for several purposes, like a second dining area or work station. This back area can also convert into a bed big enough to comfortably fit two adults.
The Basecamp 20 and 20X are designed with a wet bath that has a shower, toilet, and sink. The galley has a two-burner gas stove and sink. Little details like a spice rack and grocery storage are convenient additions. An all-electric refrigerator completes the basic kitchen set-up.
As far as the updated specifications, both Basecamps come with a furnace and tankless water heater. They include all three water tanks: 27-gallon fresh, 28-gallon grey, and 21-gallon black water tanks. Four heavy-duty stabilizer jacks are a part of the package.
The Basecamp 20X comes with a few more bells and whistles for more off-road experiences. The features that account for a bumpier ride are large Goodyear Off-Road DuraTrac Tires, stylized aluminum wheels, stainless steel front stone guard protection, tinted window guards, and a steel double step. The Basecamp 20X also sits a good foot above ground from the bottom of the axle which allows quite a bit of terrain clearance.
How much do the Airstream Basecamp trailers cost?
The Airstream Basecamp models are the most affordable trailers out of the brand’s lineup. Basecamp 20 trailers start at $45,900, and Basecamp 20X has an MSRP of $48,900.
What can tow the 2021 Airstream Basecamp 20 and 20X?
Both Basecamp 20 and 20X trailers can be towed by small and midsize SUVs and trucks. The Basecamp 20 has a base weight of 3,400 pounds and a maximum trailer capacity (GVWR) of 4,300 pounds, while the Basecamp 20X has a base weight of 3,500 pounds and a GVWR of 4,300 pounds.
Are the Basecamp models worth buying?
Although the Airstream brand has a reputation for being a very expensive RV, they are known to hold their value more than any other RV on the market. Ultimately, every RV buyer has their own expectations, needs, and budget. What RV may be right for one customer is not a match for another.
An Airstream trailer will roughly have any of the common flaws that you might find in any other RV, but it does boast its longer-lasting value, solidity, and aerodynamic properties that do make it worth the cost. Honestly, though, it really depends on your budget, preferences, and camping style.
