Can Your Motorhome Tow the Carrier? (all the numbers you need)

On average, golf carts weigh around 900 lbs. Mixed with the weight of the golf cart’s carrier, you might be wondering if your motorhome can actually tow that much weight.

To understand how much your motorhome can tow, it is important to understand a few key terms and what they mean for your motorhome’s towing capability.

First, we have the Maximum Towing Capacity.

The Maximum Towing Capacity of your motorhome can usually be found within your motorhome chassis information and specifications.

If you are unable to find this information, you are able to discover this number by knowing your vehicle’s Gross Vehicle Weight Rating and Gross Combined Weight Rating and by doing a little math.

The Gross Vehicle Weight Rating is how much weight your motorhome can haul including, the chassis, engine, fluids, passengers, accessories, and cargo. However, this number does not include what your motorhome is capable of towing.

This number can usually be found inside the driver’s door within all of the tire pressure specifications and information.

Next, you will need Gross Combined Weight Rating, or the number that includes the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (so the combined weight of the chassis, engine, passengers, cargo, etc.) and the Maximum Towing Capacity.

The Gross Combined Weight Rating can also be found with your motorhome chassis’ information and specifications.

Now to find the Maximum Towing Capacity, all you need to do is subtract the total Gross Vehicle Weight Rating from the Gross Combined Weight Rating.

The next number you will need to double check before towing a golf cart carrier behind your motorhome is the Hitch Weight Rating (this number specifies how much weight your towing package is capable of pulling). You are able to find the Hitch Weight Rating on the back of your motorhome by the hitch.

In the event that the Hitch Weight Rating is lower than the Maximum Towing Capacity, be sure to follow the Hitch Weight Rating’s number instead.

However, if the Hitch Weight Rating claims it can tow more than the Maximum Towing Capacity that we calculated earlier, DO NOT USE THAT NUMBER!

Doing so could be extremely dangerous and could cause serious damage to your motorhome, your cart carrier, your golf cart, AND YOU!
